Eastwood's Torino Gathers Speed, But Where Is It Heading?

There's still no official word on what Clint Eastwood's new film will actually be, but it continues to be reported around the globe as a sixth and final Dirty Harry film.  However, today a writer at Filmjerk is suggesting otherwise, claiming that the movie is actually a low-key drama:

Our source tells us this will be a simple, quiet and compelling drama about Walt (Eastwood), a rural bigot who finds his outlook on life changed after a family of Hmong immigrants move in to the home next to his own, striking up a friendship with the family's teenaged son Tao over the older man's now-classic car.

This certainly sounds like a more plausible scenario, yet it's still a second-hand rumor coupled with speculation.  Even so, the article has been corroborated by a couple of posters in the comments section of Hollywood-Elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Britain's largest-selling newspaper (and none-too-reliable tabloid), The Sun, is reporting the Dirty Harry story and claiming to have a new insider tip:

"Clint sees this as his final action film.  He’s looking forward to playing Harry again. But it’ll be realistic — he’ll be an old man.”

Regardless of where the project is actually heading, Warner appears content to keep the details under wraps for now.

Is Dirty Harry 6 Currently Filming?

A second source has now appeared online claiming the rumors are true, and that Eastwood is currently filming a final Dirty Harry film:

Well, I have just returned from a visit to the local watering hole The Ye Ol' Rustic, where one of the regulars and a friend of mine just so happens to work for Malpaso, Eastwood's production company. He claims that the rumors are true, Gran Torino is the sixth Harry Callahan film. And the story the writer sent into AICN seems to be pretty accurate as far as plot points are concerned.

As with the previous rumor, this is all still unconfirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt.  But it is interesting that Warner has made no effort to comment on the story, which continues to be reported all over the web.

Will Harry Callahan Pursue A Gran Torino This December?
(aka One Last Time, A Dirty Harry 6 Rumor)

Earlier today, it was revealed that Warner has quietly added a new Clint Eastwood film to its fall schedule.  This caught everyone by surprise, since Eastwood is currently finishing work on The Changeling, due November 7, 2008.  For the second film, Gran Torino, Eastwood will both star and direct the December 2008 release.

Details of the project are being kept under tight wraps, which immediately started all kinds of speculation.  Will it be another western?  A racing film?  Or could it be the working title of a film about another icon of the 1970's, Dirty Harry Callahan?

The latest rumor is claiming that the latter is exactly what the project is, and that Eastwood is indeed going to wield the mighty .44 one last time.  The plot would find a retired Harry tracking a killer- one who happens to drive a 1972 Gran Torino.  His motivation?  The killer has made the mistake of shooting Harry's grandson.

Of course, at this point, this is all best taken with a grain of salt.  The plot doesn't sound very likely, and the manner in which the details were received is suspect.  But since this could be the last time we get to speculate on whether or not a Dirty Harry 6 will finally happen, maybe we should at least enjoy it while it lasts.

(Also, thanks to "Kurt" for the heads-up.)

Harry Still Expected To Reach Consoles...Eventually

It looks like Harry is still having trouble with his superiors, as Warner Interactive has announced a change in developers for their upcoming Dirty Harry videogame.  The title was previously being developed by The Collective, but is now being transitioned to a new team.  It was not revealed which studio would be taking over, although the rumour is that it will be Monolith Productions.  Despite the shakeup, Warner insists that the game will be released...eventually.  Swell.

Eastwood and Hackman Re-Team for New Dirty Harry

Some big news out of E3 today concerning the upcoming Dirty Harry videogame.  Gene Hackman and Laurence Fishburne have signed on to play Police Supervisor Al Bressler and Rev. Carlton Clay, respectively.  As previously reported, Eastwood will also be lending his voice and likeness to Harry Callahan.

Warner has also unveiled plans for a "Definitive" edition of all five films, sometime in 2007.  Each title will be getting the HD DVD treatment, and Eastwood will even be helping out with the extras.
