The game was being developed as a title for next generation
platforms Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, and intended for a 2007
release. Eastwood was set to voice the character of Harry
Callahan, as well as provide creative input on the storyline.
Gene Hackman and Laurence Fishburne were also on board, as Lt. Al
Bressler and Rev. Carlton Clay, respectively. Warner Bros.
Interactive Entertainment was producing, and announced The
Collective as the game's developer..
The game play was being designed using reactive AI, which would
allow a player's actions to affect the outcome of the storyline.
Presumably, this was a way to let gamers decide just how 'dirty'
Dirty Harry could be. The city of San Francisco was expected
to be represented as a free-roaming environment. As a Warner
spokesman explained, "The city of San Francisco can be a
character. It can live."
The project was officially unveiled at the 2006 E3 trade show,
with Eastwood on hand for the presentation.
"The question I get asked most often on the street is 'When
are you gonna do another Dirty Harry movie?'" said Eastwood, "I'm
past the retirement age of any cop. The only way I'd be able to do a
movie is if Harry goes fly fishing with a .44 Magnum."
A promo trailer was also shown which featured in-game models and
engine schematics, but no actual game play footage. One
sequence involved Harry torturing a punk using a vice.
Afterwards, Eastwood joked, "The 'head in the vice' gag...I never
thought of that one."
In March 2007, it was announced that the game's developer (The
Collective) had been taken off the project. No further details
were ever provided, and the title was presumed cancelled.
However, Warner insists that the game is still planned for a future
release, although it likely won't appear for "a few more years".
